Theme Notebook

One’s identity is formed by societal expectations.

One's identity is formed by societal expectations is a primary theme in Roald Dahl short story, "Lamb to the Slaughter". Mary Maloney is a typical 1950's housewife, she makes her husband food and keeps him happy at all time, she keeps the house clean and tidy. She prepares a good meal for her husband and in return he gets the money. She doesn't work and her life is to obey her husband and do what he asks her to do. 1950'society, expects Mary to be this kind of wife, and pressures her to be so called a "perfect wife". Mary does not show her true self and might not be happy the way she lives but if she does not act that way, she will be considered to be a "weird person" and disrespectfull.

An identity is formed by societal expectations is also an important matter in Iran. Lately, an Iranian woman was convicted to adultery. The Iranian society expects women to be obedient to their religion and not commit adultery because the religion is strict that a person should be faithful to his/her family and not commit adultery whether it is a man or a woman. The Iranian government is strict when it comes to their religion and their penalties. The death penalty of adultery in Iran is stoning. However, to apply this punishment, since it is hard to prove that a certain person committed adultery, the religion says four people must have witnessed the adultery or the person admits that he/she has committed adultery, to be stoned. It has become an international topic to talk about in different countries. UK, for instance, has put pressure on Iran to not let them stone the woman. Many protests around the world were taken because of this cause, and because of too much pressure the Iranian government has decided not to Stone Ashtiani and to spare her.

Identity can be formed by societal expectations in the case of Mary Maloney and Ashtiani. In Mary's case, she forms her identity because society expects her to be a "perfect wife" and to obey her husband. On the other hand, Ashtiani's society expects her to obey her religion and not commit anything against the religion whether a man or woman and to be faithful to her family. Both Mary and Ashtiani's identities are being formed by their society.

Behavior can be improved by second Chances
Second chances allow for improved behavior. Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones gives ten dollars to the boy to by himself new blue suede shoes. “Now, here take this ten dollars and buy yourself some blue suede shoes. And next time do not make the mistake of latching onto my pocketbook nor nobody else’s” This quotation describes the theme statement because the boy had just tried stealing from her pocketbook to get the blue shoes but she, Mrs. Luella Bates Washington gives him the money to a stranger, a thief and gives him a second chance.
Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones also “lets him of the hook”, she does not send him to jail, nor report him even though he is a thief but instead she lets him go.
“She led him down the hall to the front door and opened it. ‘Goodnight ‘ Behave yourself, boy!’ she said” She gives him a second chance to improve his behavior by showing him that she believes in him and that she will not report him this time and he is safe to leave without any worries but he must not latch onto peoples pocketbooks.

In the case of this video, Mrs. Thompson gives Teddy a second chance to improve his behavior, Teddy is a “bad child, he does not work in class and often smells bad. Mrs. Thompson, his teacher, took pleasure marking his tests in big red marker as an F and crossing his test with a big X. She did not really know anything about him except that he was very bad at school. One day, as a normal teacher of this school, was asked to look at the old report cards of every student of her class leaving Teddy’s last because it was the least important. Finally, reading his report cards, she was in for a big surprise. She found out that Teddy used to be a much loved child
with lots of friends and had good grades. But what caused that he is no longer the same?
His mom had died and his dad was not interested in Teddy’s work so he starting failing and did not try to learn. Mrs. Thompson felt ashamed,
she decided to take good care of Teddy and help him in his school work. Teddy later on graduated with a high degree from University…This story/Video describes the theme statement, Teddy no longer is a bad student in class, he no longer is failing, he has someone who cares about him. Mrs. Thompson gives him a second chance because she knew she had done something wrong. She gave him care and support witch made him work and do well because no one was there for him after his mom died. His mom was the only one who cared, his dad was not interested but Mrs. Thompson was after that day she read the report cards, she was like a mom to him.
Behavior was improved by second chances in both cases. The case of the boy with Mrs.Luella and the case of Teddy and Mrs. Thompson. Mrs. Luella shows that she believes in him witch then caused the boy to not steal anymore because no one probably believes in him at home while Mrs. Thompson showed that she cares about Teddy witch made him start to work and do his best at school because no one at home is there for him while Mrs.Thompson is. Behavior was improved in both stories just by second chances.
